Duo Armande (clarinet & violin / viola)

"Duo Armande is a unique & versatile ensemble
that is a refreshing alternative to more traditional groups”

Vibrant & talented musicians Shulah Oliver and Claire Hawkes met whilst studying at the Royal College of Music in 2000 & formed Duo Armande after
discovering some of the great repertoire for clarinet & violin/viola.  Since then, the Duo has performed extensively throughout Britain at events and venues including The National Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, Winchester Cathedral, More Music @ The Scoop, and Worcester Festival & performed a concert tour of Corfu, .

Duo Armande enjoys the challenge of exploring the repertoire for their unusual combination of instruments.  Their discoveries into this lesser known repertoire have led them to a variety of works ranging from Bruch's well known & beautiful Clarinet & Viola Concerto to the delightful, but lesser known music of Busch, Jacob, Hindemith & Rebecca Clarke.  The repertoire also includes transcriptions of works such as Mozart's Sonata arr. Droste, & Beethoven's 3 Duos arr. C.F. Schmidt.  Claire & Shulah also arrange an eclectic selection of popular classics & folksongs to suit their instruments & their audiences.

When not performing as Duo Armande, Claire and Shulah are in demand as soloists, and chamber musicians.  They also freelance with orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and English Symphony Orchestra and have worked under eminent conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Sir Richard Hickox, Sir Colin Davis and Sir Charles Mackerras.

As members of other ensembles Claire and Shulah have performed at a variety of prestigious events and venues including Cheltenham International Festival, BBC Proms, Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting People's Forum in Uganda, the Southbank, Concertgebouw and Royal Albert Hall.

Musical Mosaics reflects the cover photograph - an inspirational voyage leading you through the sunlight of much loved tunes, the mists of unfamiliar compositions & onwards under the bridge into the unknown world of music by lesser known composers.
